As of 2001 India census, Dibrugarh had a population of 122,523. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%.Dibrugarh has an average literacy rate of 81%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82% and, female literacy is 80%. In Dibrugarh, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Economic Activities in the district is dominated by two major industries, Oil & Natural Gas and Tea Production. It was in Digboi that first time oil well was dug during the British era. Duliajan, Hugrijan and Moran are the key locations for oil and gas industry in the district. Duliajan also happens to be the headquarter of the Public Sector Undetaking Oil India Limited. Apart from this Dibrugarh district boasts of the highest amount of tea produced in India. There are several tea gardens dating back to the British era.
Apart from this Dibrugarh has also been famous for wood & wood works, plywood factories in Margherita, cane and bamboo furnitures etc. Cottage industries specializing in production of Assam silk (Muga Silk), phulam gamosa (A traditional piece of cloth, used as ornate head-scarf as well as traditional towel), mekhela chador (the famous traditional pure silk dress of Assam State of India) ("Chador" pronounced as 'Saador') are also in vogue.

The Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited ( BCPL) or Gas Cracker project is a joint venture promoted by GAIL (India), which has 70 pc stake in it. The remaining equity will be shared equally among Oil India Limited (OIL), Numaligarh Refineries and the Assam government. The company is implementing the project to set-up an integrated Petrochemical Complex at Lepetkata, District Dibrugarh. The site has been identified by the Govt. of Assam and necessary Environmental clearance has been obtained.
Namdapha National Park, which is 160 km from Dibrugarh, spread over 1,985 sq km, is the largest national park of Arunachal Pradesh and one of the largest wildlife protected area in India. Namdapha is also known as a Botanist?s dream. It's a bird sanctuary as well as a Tiger reserve. You can find four big cats here: tiger, leopard, clouded leopard, and snow leopard. You can also see the rare white-winged wood duck and hoolock gibbon here.
The Joypore reserved forest, now a part of the Dihing Patkai wildlife sanctuary is a very important forest of Assam. It is among one of the last remaining Tropical Rainforest in India. It has a varied species of flora and fauna which includes tiger, leopards, gibbon, clouded leopard, pig tailed macaque, stump talied macaque, great pied hornbill etc. It spreads over an area of 110 sq kms.
History buffs can explore the four airfields, which were used by the British against Japanese forces in Myanmar during World II in the Dibrugarh area.
Dibrugarh is surrounded by tea plantations and has tea factories and rice and oilseed mills. You can take an interesting tour of the tea gardens which are located in and around the town. There are a large number of tea estates along NH-37 which can be explored along a picturesque road route. The mighty river Brahmaputra is at its majestic best here; a cruise down the river is highly recommended.
