Day 1 - San José, Costa Rica
Depart for San Jose, Costa Rica (international flights not included in cost – please enquire for further details).
Upon arrival in San José you will be met and transferred to your hotel where you will have a chance to relax and freshen up.

White water rafting on the Pacuare River
You will be met early this morning and be transferred to the Pacuare River with breakfast en-route. After safety training and an introduction to rafting, you’ll enjoy an exciting 1-1.5 hr white water trip passing luxuriant rainforest teaming with birds and other wildlife. Once you have arrived at Pacuare Lodge you will have a chance to freshen up before lunch. In the afternoon you will have a guided hike to a nearby waterfall. In the evening you can relax to the sound of the rainforest.

Rainforest Tour
Today you will have the chance to explore the forest with the resident naturalist guide. You will also have the option to visit a local canyon or take a horseback ride to a nearby village (both at extra cost). You could of course just take the opportunity to soak up the ambience of the surrounding forest and river. In the evening you will witness the change in the forest on a night walk.

Rainforest Tour
After another relaxing night you will feel ready for more adventure, maybe a hike to a remote indigenous community or a tour through the forest canopy on a zip line.

Transfer to Tortuguero and Visit the CCC Visitor Centre
After breakfast you will depart Pacuare Lodge and be transferred in time to catch your bus to Tortuguero. If time allows upon arrival you will visit Caribbean Conservation Corporation’s visitor centre and turtle museum. Take the opportunity to relax to the sounds of the waves of the Caribbean sea in background.

Visit Tortuguero National Park
Today you will be taken on two different canal tours in Tortuguero National Park. Tortuguero National Park is a National Park within the Tortuguero Conservation Area. The reserve is also included in the Humedal Caribe Noreste, a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The park is located in the Limón Province of northeastern Costa Rica. The park has incredible biological variety, due to the existence within the reserve of eleven different habitats, including rainforest, swamps, beaches, and lagoons. Tortuguero beach also holds the honour of being the largest green turtle rookery (nesting ground) in the Caribbean. Depending on the season an evening turtle tour on Tortuguero beach.

Transfer to Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort, La Fortuna
You will leave early this morning and transfer to La Fortuna at the foot of Volcan Arenal, the most active volcano in Costa Rica. The Arenal Volcano National Park is located within the larger 504,094-acre (204,000-ha) Arenal Conservation Area, which protects some 16 reserves between the Tilarán and Guanacaste mountain ranges. This area contains a great wealth of geologic and biological complexity, as evidenced by the active and incredible Arenal Volcano.

Thermal Springs
Today is a relaxation day where you can take advantage of the thermally heated volcanic spa. The Tabacon experience at the Arenal Volcano centres on the hot thermal springs, pools and the Grand Spa. The main sunbathing and swimming area features five pools with temperatures ranging from 25 to 38 degrees C (77 to 102 F), the main one with a swim-up bar and thermal water slide. The pools on the lower section offer a more secluded ambiance with spectacular volcano and rainforest views, and they are also within the main service area of the Arenal Swim-Up Bar.

Transfer to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Transfer to Monteverde crossing Lago Arenal by boat. The Trapp Family Lodge is the closest lodge to the Monteverde Nature Reserve. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a private, non-profit reserve administered by the Tropical Science Center. It spans six distinct ecological zones and helps to protect birds and butterflies, mammals, insects, and thousands of species of plants. A home to the famed resplendent quetzal, this reserve is especially popular with birders.

Visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Today you will have the chance to explore the mysterious cloud forest surrounding the lodge in search of its secretive inhabitants that include resplendent quetzal, Baird’s tapir, ocelot and jaguar.

Transfer to Nosara, Peninsula de Nicoya
You will leave early this morning to transfer to Peninsular de Nicoya on the Northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
You will find a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine in your room to help you unwind and be treated to a candlelit 3 course dinner in the evening.

This morning you indulge in breakfast in bed. During the rest day you can take a horseback tour of the local area.

Today you will be transferred back to San Jose where you can relax by the hotel pool or maybe see some of the sights of the capital city.

You will be met in time to transfer to the airport in time to catch your return flights.

High - Fitness is vital at this level, as the environment traversed may be remote and challenging. These rugged experiences include long walks, trekking, cycling or rafting in isolated areas through variable weather conditions for up to eight to ten hours a day. These trips are usually 13 to 19 days in duration.
The ‘Ultimate Nepal Trekker’, is a good example of this trip activity level as it involves hiking and trekking for up to eight hours a day. Maximum altitude will be 4000m and you need to be very fit in order to withstand the weather conditions. Also, ‘Kilimanjaro Trek- Rongai route’ is another example that applies to this this activity level. Good physical condition is essential and previous hill-walking experience or preparation is advisable.
Other Activity Levels
Basic - Designed for travellers who enjoy the outdoors, are in good health, and want an interesting yet relaxing wildlife experience. These trips
may involve walking, trekking, hiking, cycling, rafting or sea kayaking at a very slow pace. Certain trips involve safari drives for a maximum of
five hours a day. Most of these trips are usually a week long in duration.
The ‘Classic Yala Tour’, ‘Kenya Luxury’ and ‘Luxury in Botswana’ itineraries are the best examples of this activity level as you’ll have a relaxed
holiday. These trips are mostly about culture and sightseeing. There will be exploring on foot and safaris drives involved as well. Most travellers
will find themselves comfortable with the basic activity level trips.
Moderate - Requires a spirit of adventure and some degree of fitness, as the trip might consist of many activities or long journeys. These adventures involve walking, trekking, hiking, cycling, rafting, sea kayaking, or driving for long hours, at times for up to six to eight hours a day at a steady pace. The maximum altitude is 3000m, so it requires you to be reasonably physically fit. The trips are usually 6 to 12 days in duration.
The ‘Only Tigers’, a 11 day itinerary, is a perfect example of this activity level as it involves long journeys for up to eight hours a day and a bit of walking. Also, ‘Around Spitsbergen - Kvitøya and Beyond ’, a 10 day itinerary is another example of this trip activity level.
You should be reasonably fit because you will be travelling in extreme weather conditions.
Advanced - At this level, PlanetWildlife recommends previous experience of the activity involved. These are our most challenging and advanced expeditions. They include long walks, cycling, trekking, hiking or rafting in variable weather conditions for more than ten hours a day. These trips may often be over 3 weeks in duration.
The ‘South Atlantic Odyssey’, a 31-day itinerary, is a perfect example of this trip activity level as it involves sailing for long hours in extreme weather conditions. Also, the ‘Snow Leopard Experience’ itinerary is another example which best suits this activity level. Ascents and descents are over 1000m at altitudes up to 6000m and the climate can be rigorous and challenging. Excellent physical condition and previous mountain trekking experience or appropriate preparation is essential.
