Cambodia: Siem Reap Explorer

Siem Reap

Welcome to Cambodia, and to Siem Reap—a city that derives its vibrance equally from its ancient heritage and the more modern French colonial culture. Upon arrival, our local representative will transfer you to the luxurious Victoria Angkor Resort. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore Siem Reap on your own. The 5 star Victoria Angkor Resort provides serenity, nostalgic comfort and elegant refinement, in the heart of Siem Reap. The building's graceful colonial architecture of the 1930's provides a sense of peaceful tranquility.

Siem Reap's most famous landmark is Angkor Wat, a temple complex built by King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the largest Hindu temple complex in the world. The temple is built in the Khmer style of architecture and was dedicated to Lord Vishnu when it was first built and as Buddhism swept through the region, Buddhist influences were added to the temple complex.

Siem Reap - Angkor Wat (BL)

Head for Angkor Wat before sunrise. Built as the funerary temple for Suryavarman II, who ruled from 1112 to 1152, Angkor never fails to marvel visitors, with its grand scale, surreal bas reliefs and unbelievable attention to detail. Spend the morning exploring one of man's most magnificent creations and return to the hotel for a late breakfast.

Head out again for a full day visit to the South Gate of Angkor Thom and the Temples of Bayon, Baphoun, Phimean Akas, the Royal Enclosure, the Terraces of Elephants and the Leper King. Also see Bayon temple, with its mysterious towers and beautiful bas reliefs, on elephant back. You will ride the elephant from the South Gate of Angkor Thom to the Bayon temple. Enjoy lunch at Nest restaurant.

Explore Ta Phrom, finally. This jungle-clad temple with overgrown trees exudes a haunting and exotic atmosphere. The magnificent roots of a tree push between the temple's huge stone blocks in a strange embrace. Finish the tour with an unforgettable sunset, seen from one of Angkor Wat's vantage points.

Siem Reap – Banteay Srey & Tonlesap Lake (BL)

Visit Banteay Srey, which was off limits for many years due to its remote location and Khmer Rouge activity. Built in the late 10th century and dedicated to Shiva, Banteay Srey's pink limestone walls contain the best bas reliefs of any temple at Angkor. If you are interested, you may choose to visit the Cambodian Landmine Museum, Prevention and Rehabilitation Center. Learn about how efforts at clearing mines around Angkor Wat and other major tourist sites have been successful. However, millions of mines remain buried and significantly impact the lives of the Cambodian people. Lunch is at a local restaurant today.

Later, travel to Kampong Kleang Village. See wooden houses on 10 meter tall stilts, surrounded by water in the wet season and on the flood plains of the lake in the dry season. Travel on a dirt road to reach the village, and see many wooden houses and traditional fishing equipment en route. Before you explore the village, a local family welcomes you into their stilt house for some tea and coffee. Then learn about village life while visiting a local school, seeing the smoking of catfish, and speaking to fishermen. Later, enjoy a boat ride and watch a peaceful sunset on Tonle Sap Lake.

Siem Reap – Beng Mealea (BD)

Enjoy a morning of leisure today. Travel to Beng Mealea, another seldom-visited ruin and a spectacular jungle temple, in the afternoon. The area has barely undergone any restoration so you can watch as the jungle becomes one with the carved sandstone, in its original state. Photograph fantastical scenes as roots of Kapok trees twist and wind their way around carvings and grey galleries.

In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner and Apsara show at the Mondial Restaurant.
