A major area of the Sunderbans is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tiger Reserve, National Park, Biosphere Reserve, and Reserve Forest.

The Sunderbans forest is one of the largest protected areas for the Bengal tiger. Fishing cats, leopards, macaques, foxes and jungle cats also live here. Gangetic dolphins, crocodiles, olive ridley, hawksbill and green turtles inhabit the waters of Sunderbans National Park. Bird watching enthusiasts can look for openbill storks, black-capped kingfishers, black-headed ibises, brahminy kites, marsh harriers and grey herons among the diverse bird species found at the Sundarbans.
